Learning Dynamics: Reference Vocabulary
Learning Dynamics describes the structural conditions under which productive interaction becomes possible, persists, or breaks down.
This vocabulary defines the core concepts of the theory.
These terms describe properties of interaction, not properties of the human or the system in isolation.
Productive Interaction
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Productive Interaction is interaction through which a participant can move toward an Intended Outcome.
Productivity does not require ease, immediate success, or uninterrupted performance.
It requires a viable relation between what the interaction demands and the capacity available to meet those demands.
Participant
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Participant is the person whose productive interaction with a system is being considered.
The participant is not treated as an isolated source of either success or failure.
System
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The System is the organised environment with which the participant interacts in pursuit of an Intended Outcome.
A system may include tasks, interfaces, rules, sequences, people, tools, institutions, and environmental conditions.
Intended Outcome
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Intended Outcome is the meaningful result toward which productive interaction is directed.
Structural Transformation may change the path toward the Intended Outcome.
It does not replace that outcome with an easier one.
Interaction Demand
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
An Interaction Demand is a requirement that must be met for productive interaction to proceed at a given moment.
Demands may concern perception, understanding, decision, action, regulation, communication, timing, or coordination.
Interaction Capacity
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Interaction Capacity is the capacity currently available to meet the demands of interaction.
Interaction Capacity is not a single fixed quantity or a fully interchangeable reserve.
Different demands may require different capacities, and their availability can change across Interaction Moments.
Interaction Structure
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Interaction Structure is the interaction-specific arrangement through which Interaction Demands and available Interaction Capacity are brought into a functioning relationship.
It is not a property of the participant alone or of the system alone.
It arises when the structures of demand and capacity are related within a particular interaction.
Interaction Structure determines how entry, Continuity, Productivity, and Sustainability become possible or impossible.
Systemic Structure of Interaction

The Systemic Structure of interaction is the organisation of local Demand–Capacity relations that together constitute the interaction as a functioning whole.
Each local Interaction Demand specifies a required form of response.
Relevant Interaction Capacity enables that form to be realised.
The resulting local Demand–Capacity relations function as interdependent elements of Productive Interaction.
A breakdown in one relation may remain local or may alter the functioning of the wider interaction.
Local Demand–Capacity Relation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A Local Demand–Capacity Relation is the functional relation between a specific Interaction Demand and the capacity available to meet it.
It is the smallest structural unit through which Productive Interaction can be analysed.
A local relation is viable when the required response can be formed under the conditions available at that moment.
Phasal Structure of Interaction
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Phasal Structure of interaction is the ordered relation among the conditions through which Productive Participation develops.
Its fundamental sequence is:
Enterability → Continuity → Productivity → Sustainability
Each phase depends on conditions established in the phases before it.
An interaction cannot become continuous unless it can be entered.
Continuity does not by itself guarantee Productivity.
Productivity in the present does not by itself guarantee Sustainability across time.
Structural Compatibility
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Structural Compatibility is the condition in which Interaction Structure provides a viable relationship between Interaction Demands and the Interaction Capacity available to meet them.
Compatibility belongs to the relationship itself.
It is not an isolated property of either participant or system.
Structural Incompatibility
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Structural Incompatibility is a condition in which Interaction Structure does not provide a viable relationship between one or more Interaction Demands and the Interaction Capacity available to meet them.
Structural Incompatibility may prevent entry, disrupt Continuity, constrain Productivity, or make an interaction unsustainable.
Failure under Structural Incompatibility does not, by itself, establish a deficiency in the participant or an inherent defect in the system.
Initiation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Initiation is the establishment of the first viable Interaction Structure of a given interaction.
Initiation begins from conditions already present in the participant, the system, the environment, and their histories.
But it cannot inherit the structure of the interaction it begins, because that interaction has no prior Interaction Moment of its own.
Entry
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Entry is the transition into an Interaction Moment.
First entry establishes the initial viable Interaction Structure.
Subsequent entry proceeds from conditions that include the effects of prior Interaction Moments.
Entry is not guaranteed by previous success and must remain structurally possible at each transition.
Enterability
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Enterability is the condition in which entry into an Interaction Moment is structurally possible.
An Interaction Moment is enterable when its demands can be met through the Interaction Capacity available under the current Interaction Structure.
Enterability concerns possibility of entry, not certainty of performance.
Interaction Moment
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
An Interaction Moment is the local unit in which current Interaction Demands encounter the Interaction Capacity available at that time.
An Interaction Moment is defined functionally rather than by a fixed duration.
Its boundaries are determined by a meaningful renewal or change in the conditions of interaction.
Transition
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A Transition is the movement from one Interaction Moment to another.
At every transition, Interaction Demands and available Interaction Capacity enter a renewed relationship.
A transition therefore constitutes a new test of Enterability.
Continuity
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Continuity is the preservation of Enterability across successive Interaction Moments.
Continuity is not a single achievement secured at the beginning.
It is sustained through renewed entry across transitions.
Continuity must be distinguished from mere observable continuation maintained through compensation.
Productivity
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Productivity is effective movement through interaction toward the Intended Outcome.
Productivity presupposes more than continued activity.
An interaction may continue without producing meaningful movement toward its outcome.
Sustainability
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Sustainability is the capacity of Productive Interaction to remain viable across its wider trajectory.
Sustainability requires that the conditions and costs of continuing do not progressively destroy the possibility of later entry, Continuity, or Productivity.
Present performance does not establish Sustainability.
Interaction History
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Interaction History is the set of interaction-generated changes carried into subsequent Interaction Moments.
It is not merely a record of what occurred.
It includes changes in available Interaction Capacity, orientation, expectations, readiness, demands, and other conditions relevant to future entry.
Interaction History may support a restorative or deteriorating trajectory.
Restorative Interaction
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Restorative Interaction is Productive Interaction whose aftereffects strengthen or restore the conditions of its own continuation.
It does not restore the participant directly.
It makes productive engagement possible under conditions through which capacity, orientation, readiness, or expectation can recover.
Restoration is therefore an aftereffect of viable Productive Interaction.
Restorative Trajectory
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A Restorative Trajectory is a sequence of Interaction Moments in which Productive Interaction progressively improves the conditions of what follows.
The next Interaction Moment becomes more enterable not merely because an immediate task was completed, but because interaction has changed the conditions from which the next entry begins.
Across time, interaction can help restore the conditions of its own continuation.
Deteriorating Trajectory
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A Deteriorating Trajectory is a sequence of Interaction Moments in which interaction progressively weakens the conditions of what follows.
Observable performance may continue while later entry, Continuity, recovery, or Sustainability becomes less viable.
Across time, interaction can consume the conditions of its own continuation.
Structural Transformation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Structural Transformation is a change in Interaction Structure that removes or reduces a structural source of incompatibility while preserving the Intended Outcome.
It may change demands, sequencing, representation, timing, support, local Demand–Capacity relations, or their wider organisation.
Structural Transformation does not necessarily change the participant or the system as wholes.
It changes how they are brought into relation within the interaction.
Compensation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Compensation is additional effort, support, or regulation that enables interaction to proceed while a source of Structural Incompatibility remains unresolved.
Compensation may enable entry, preserve performance, or maintain Continuity.
It carries interaction across a mismatch.
It does not, by itself, remove that mismatch.
Compensatory Cost
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Compensatory Cost is the consequence of maintaining interaction through compensation rather than through resolved Structural Compatibility.
Compensatory Cost does not necessarily accumulate.
When it is not recovered, it becomes part of the conditions of subsequent Interaction Moments and may weaken the Sustainability of the wider trajectory.
Compensatory Continuation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Compensatory Continuation is observable continuation maintained through compensation under unresolved Structural Incompatibility.
It must be distinguished from Continuity grounded in Structural Compatibility.
An interaction may remain locally continuous through compensation while becoming globally unsustainable.
Effort Paradox
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Effort Paradox is the condition in which effort preserves present performance under unchanged Structural Incompatibility while weakening the conditions required for future interaction.
Effort is not inherently harmful.
The paradox arises when effort substitutes for Structural Transformation and its cost is not sufficiently recovered.
Structural Entrapment
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Structural Entrapment is the condition in which the cost of maintaining an interaction under Structural Incompatibility begins to close the paths by which it could be transformed or left.
An interaction may still be locally Productive, while continuing it makes the interaction harder to change or leave.
The existence of an exit does not guarantee the possibility of taking it.
An interaction can make its own exit non-enterable.
Productive Participation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Productive Participation is sustained access to meaningful activity through Productive Interaction with a system.
It is broader than the completion of a single task.
It depends on the continuing viability of entry, Continuity, Productivity, and Sustainability.
Canonical Structural Distinction
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Learning Dynamics recognises two complementary dimensions of Interaction Structure:
Systemic Structure
How local Demand–Capacity relations are organised as a functioning interaction.
Phasal Structure
How interaction develops through Enterability, Continuity, Productivity, and Sustainability.
These are not two separate structures.
They are two dimensions of the same Interaction Structure:
Systemic Structure describes what interaction is organised from.
Phasal Structure describes how its viability unfolds across time.
