Human systems are becoming more capable, complex, and demanding. Yet interaction often fails not because the participant lacks intelligence or willingness, and not because the system lacks capability, but because their relationship is structurally incompatible.

What is Learning Dynamics?
Learning Dynamics is a theory of Productive Interaction.
It explains how Productive Interaction becomes possible, acquires its first viable Interaction Structure, remains enterable across time, changes the conditions of what follows, and can be preserved or restored without abandoning the Intended Outcome.
Its central claim is that the possibility of Productive Interaction does not reside in the Participant or the System alone. It resides in the Structure of Interaction through which Interaction Demands and available Interaction Capacity are brought into relation.
Why it is needed
Human systems are becoming more capable, more complex, and more demanding. Yet participation in those systems is often explained through isolated properties of the person: ability, motivation, effort, discipline, readiness, or resilience.
Learning Dynamics begins from a different premise. When interaction fails, the primary object of explanation is not necessarily the Participant or the System, but the structure of the relationship between them.
The same Participant and the same System, pursuing the same Intended Outcome, may fail under one Structure of Interaction and succeed under another.
Learning Dynamics exists to explain that difference.
Central phenomenon
Productive Interaction
Productive Interaction is interaction through which a Participant makes meaningful progress toward an Intended Outcome while preserving or strengthening the conditions required for subsequent Productive Interaction.
It is not established merely because a Participant is present, a task is assigned, activity continues, or an immediate result is produced.
An interaction may produce correct performance while weakening the conditions of what follows. Another may produce modest immediate progress while restoring available Interaction Capacity, orientation, expectations, or readiness.
Productivity must therefore be understood across an Interaction Trajectory, not only within an isolated moment.
Central research question
What governs the possibility and dynamics of Productive Interaction?

Object of investigation
Learning Dynamics investigates the evolving Structure of Interaction between Participant and System.
Its object is not the Participant, the System, the task, or the environment considered in isolation. It is the relationship through which Interaction Demands encounter the Interaction Capacity available at successive Interaction Moments.
Learning Dynamics recognises two complementary dimensions of that structure:
- — Systemic Structure: how local Demand–Capacity Relations are organised as a functioning interaction.
- — Phasal Structure: how interaction develops through Enterability, Continuity, Productivity, and Sustainability.
These are not separate structures. They are two dimensions of the same Interaction Structure.
Primary explanatory construct
Structural Compatibility
Structural Compatibility is the condition in which Interaction Structure provides a viable relationship between Interaction Demands and the Interaction Capacity available to meet them.
Compatibility belongs to the relationship itself. It is not an isolated property of either Participant or System.
Structural Incompatibility may prevent Entry, disrupt Continuity, constrain Productivity, or make an interaction unsustainable.
The temporal architecture of Productive Interaction
Initiation
Initiation establishes the first viable Interaction Structure of a given interaction. It begins from conditions already present in the Participant, the System, the environment, and their histories. But it cannot inherit the structure of the interaction it begins, because that interaction has no prior Interaction Moment of its own.
Continuous Enterability
Entry is not secured once for the interaction as a whole. At every Transition, Interaction Demands and available Interaction Capacity enter a renewed relationship. Productive Interaction persists only while successive Interaction Moments remain enterable.
Restorative Interaction
Productive Interaction does not merely produce an immediate result. It can restore the conditions of its own continuation. Across successive Interaction Moments, its aftereffects can strengthen or restore available Interaction Capacity, orientation, expectations, and readiness, making what follows more enterable. This can establish a Restorative Trajectory in which Productive Interaction progressively improves the conditions of further Productive Interaction.
Structural Transformation
A Structural Incompatibility cannot be resolved while the Structure of Interaction that produces it remains unchanged. Structural Transformation changes Interaction Structure sufficiently to remove or reduce a structural source of incompatibility while preserving the Intended Outcome. It changes the path, not the meaning of the destination.
Compensatory Continuation
Compensation can preserve Entry, performance, or Continuity while a source of Structural Incompatibility remains unresolved. It carries interaction across a mismatch. It does not, by itself, remove that mismatch. When Compensatory Cost is not recovered, interaction may remain locally continuous while becoming unsustainable across its wider trajectory.
Effort Paradox
Effort is not inherently harmful. It can support learning, adaptation, or recovery when it changes the conditions of interaction. The paradox arises when Effort preserves present performance under unchanged Structural Incompatibility while weakening the conditions required for future interaction.
Core theoretical proposition
Productive Interaction depends on the evolving structural relationship between Interaction Demands and available Interaction Capacity across successive Interaction Moments.
That relationship is shaped by the Interaction Structure established at Initiation, changes in demands and capacity, the effects carried through Interaction History, recovery and deterioration, Compensation, support, and Structural Transformation.
The dynamics of Productive Interaction therefore cannot be explained adequately by the Participant, task, System, motivation, effort, or performance considered in isolation.
Why Therapeutic Education is therapeutic
Therapeutic Education is the first engineering discipline developed from Learning Dynamics.
It does not attempt to restore the Participant directly. It transforms the Structure of Interaction so that viable Entry and Continuity become possible while the Intended Outcome is preserved.
When Productive Interaction becomes possible and remains continuous, restoration may follow as an aftereffect.
We do not restore the person directly. We make Productive Interaction possible. Restoration follows.

Initial empirical focus
The initial empirical focus of Learning Dynamics is Productive Interaction under fluctuating Interaction Capacity.
This includes participants for whom Entry and Continuity are disrupted by stress, trauma, anxiety, fatigue, neurodivergence, or deteriorating Interaction History.
The initial domain provides a controlled context for developing and testing the theory before extending it to broader forms of human interaction with complex systems.
The primary empirical question is not merely whether a task is completed. It is whether a change in Interaction Structure alters:

- — restorative or deteriorating aftereffects
- — dependence on Compensation
- — Sustainability across the wider Interaction Trajectory
Research programme
The current Learning Dynamics research programme aims to:

- — identify the conditions of viable Initiation and Enterability;

Criterion of success
Learning Dynamics succeeds as a theory if its constructs explain and predict the emergence, continuation, restoration, deterioration, compensation, and breakdown of Productive Interaction more effectively than explanations based on isolated properties of the Participant or System.
It succeeds as an engineering framework if Structural Transformation enables productive movement toward an Intended Outcome where unchanged interaction produces exclusion, compensatory dependence, deterioration, or collapse.
Its strongest empirical test is not merely whether performance improves, but whether transformed interaction:

- — preserves Continuity
- — reduces dependence on Compensation
- — strengthens the conditions of what follows
- — sustains productive movement across time
Current status
Learning Dynamics is a developing research programme.
Its laws and constructs form a coherent current theoretical architecture, but remain subject to terminological refinement, operationalisation, comparison with adjacent theories, formal modelling, empirical validation, and revision.
The framework does not claim that all mechanisms underlying Productive Interaction have already been identified.
It defines the phenomenon, the primary explanatory relationship, the current laws governing its dynamics, and the research programme through which those claims can be tested.
Productive Interaction does not depend on the Participant or the System alone.
It depends on how their relationship is structured, how that structure becomes enterable, and how interaction changes the possibility of what comes next.

Observation
The same child. Two different interactions.
One interaction repeatedly breaks down. The other holds together almost effortlessly.
On the left, the child visibly tries to follow a simple mathematics lesson. He enters the interaction briefly, loses it, and tries again.
On the right, at nearly the same time, he watches Star Wars. His posture settles. His attention holds. The interaction continues.
Interest, motivation, and diagnosis may describe part of this contrast.
But how to make the mathematics interaction more enterable without changing its Intended Outcome, without relying only on pressure or external rewards, and without diluting the mathematics?
This is not about removing difficulty. It is about preventing difficulty from becoming a breakdown of interaction.
Learning survives difficulty when continuity is preserved.
Learning Dynamics investigates whether the structural conditions that preserve productive interaction can be discovered, measured, and deliberately transformed.
